The Truth About Hijab in the Qur’an

The word “Hijab” is never used in the Qur’an to mean a headscarf or a piece of cloth that women must wear. Instead, hijab in the Qur’an means a barrier, a separation, or a curtain.

Many people believe hijab is about covering the hair, but when we go directly to the Qur’an, it never commands women to cover their hair or faces. The real commandment is about modesty, covering the chest, and lowering the gaze—for both men and women.

The Qur’anic Verses on Modesty and Dress Code

1. Lowering the Gaze Applies to Both Genders
   “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is aware of what they do.” (24:30)

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears, and to draw their coverings over their chests.” (24:31)

• The first command is about controlling your eyes—modesty starts with behavior, not clothing.
• Both men and women are commanded to lower their gaze and guard their chastity.

2. Covering the Chest, Not the Hair
   “And let them draw their coverings over their chests.” (24:31)

• Women at the time already wore head coverings (khimar) but left their chests exposed.
• The command here is to extend their existing coverings to cover their chests—not their hair.
• Nowhere does it say to cover the hair, face, or entire body.

3. The Outer Garment for Public Safety, Not Religious Law
   “O Prophet, tell your wives, daughters, and the believing women to bring their outer garments closer to themselves. That is more suitable so that they may be recognized and not harassed.” (33:59)

• This verse tells women to wear an outer garment when going out to be recognized and protected from harassment.
• This is a practical command based on the social conditions of the time—not a universal religious law.

Hadith Contradicts Reality and the Qur’an

The problem with Hadith is that it often contradicts the Qur’an and reality itself.

• The Qur’an forbids alcohol, and those who drink it and abuse it end up in problems and destruction—proving the Qur’an right.
• The Qur’an forbids gambling, and those who engage in it eventually lose everything—proving the Qur’an right.

But then, these same people who claim hijab is a requirement for success ignore reality.

• Many Muslim women who don’t wear hijab are extremely successful in life.
• Many non-Muslims who don’t wear hijab are doing just fine.
• If hijab was truly a divine law that impacted success, why do people who don’t follow it still succeed?

When you take man-made rules and try to make them divine, you undermine the Qur’an itself.
