Surah 4 – An-Nisa (127-147) – Translation & Inferred Meanings

4:127
They ask you for a ruling about women. Say, “Allah gives you a ruling about them, and so does what has been recited to you in the Book concerning female orphans whom you do not give what is prescribed for them, and whom you wish to marry, and about the oppressed children, and that you should stand firm for justice for the orphans. And whatever good you do—indeed, Allah is ever knowing of it.”

Infers: Do not lead women on if you do not intend to marry them. Using their vulnerability for personal gain while having no intent to commit is injustice. If you desire a single mother, then like any other woman, marry her, give her her rights, and take responsibility. Justice and fairness in marriage are obligations, not choices.

4:128
And if a woman fears cruelty or neglect from her husband, there is no sin upon them if they seek reconciliation between themselves, and reconciliation is best. And selfishness is ever-present in human souls. But if you do good and have taqwa, then surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

Infers: If there are problems in a marriage, they should be openly communicated. People are often unaware of their own selfishness unless it is pointed out to them. Staying silent only allows issues to grow. It is always better to address them early and resolve them.

4:129
You will never be able to maintain equal treatment between wives, even if you strive to do so. So do not incline too much to one and leave another hanging. And if you make amends and have taqwa, then surely Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Infers: Polygyny is a rich man’s problem. If you cannot provide equally and fairly, you have no business taking on more than one wife. Neglecting one while favouring another is injustice.

4:130
But if they separate, Allah will enrich each of them from His abundance. And ever is Allah Encompassing and Wise.

Infers: Divorce is permitted in Islam. Do not let social stigmas trap you in unhealthy relationships.

4:131
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you, and you, to fear Allah. But if you disbelieve, then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Infers: Those who truly believe in Allah do not exploit others and remain just in every situation, including marriage and divorce. Those who are unjust and take advantage of others do not truly fear Allah as they claim.

4:132
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

Infers: No matter what happens in life, trust in Allah’s plan. Whatever happens, happens for a reason.

4:133
If He wills, He can do away with you, O people, and bring others [in your place]. And ever is Allah competent to do that.

Infers: You may think you are irreplaceable, but Allah can always bring someone else who will see the best in them and treat them better than you ever have.

4:134
Whoever desires the reward of this world—then with Allah is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And ever is Allah Hearing and Seeing.

Infers: If you want the best life in this world, live as if Allah is always watching and aware of your actions. True success comes from aligning your life with His guidance.

4:135
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So do not follow personal inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed, Allah is Ever-Acquainted with what you do.

Infers: Do not let tribalism, wealth, or status dictate marriage selection. A righteous spouse is chosen based on faith and character, not race, caste, or financial background. If you reject someone solely for superficial reasons, you are ignoring Allah’s command to uphold justice, even when it is against your personal biases.

4:136
O you who have believed, believe in Allah, His Messenger, and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.

Infers: Prioritizing customs over revelation only leads to misguidance. It is vital to follow Islam instead of culture, especially when making significant life choices.

4:137
Indeed, those who believed then disbelieved, then believed then disbelieved, then increased in disbelief—Allah will not forgive them, nor will He guide them to a way.

Infers: A Muslim is defined by divine guidance, not culture. Faith is not something to pick and choose when convenient. If your identity shifts between Islam and culture, you are not truly submitting.

4:138
Give tidings to the hypocrites that for them is a painful punishment.

Infers: Faith should define one’s identity. A Muslim should not be shaped by culture.

4:139
Those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers—do they seek honor through them? But indeed, all honor belongs to Allah.

Infers: Those who are ashamed of their Islamic identity and seek validation through Western ideals only expose the weakness of their faith.

4:140
“And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, then do not sit with them until they engage in another conversation. Otherwise, you will be like them. Surely, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell.”

Infers: Do not sit there while they elevate Hadith, associate divinity to the Prophet, and pass rulings as if they have authority. At the very least, express your displeasure and walk away until they are done with the nonsense. Aligning with those who distort the faith makes you complicit.

4:141
[They are] those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allah, they say, “Were we not with you?” But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], “Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?” So Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection. And never will Allah give the disbelievers a way over the believers.

Infers: These scholars who claim to be one of us sit on the fence while we suffer. They tell our enemies, “We kept them in line for you, we stopped them from rising and getting ahead in life.” Do not mistake these people for allies. How can it not be obvious to them that Islam is the Qur’an alone? Their hesitation is not ignorance—it is deliberate.

4:142
Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He who deceives them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing themselves to the people and not remembering Allah except a little.

Infers: Do they fight oppression, stand up against injustice, and challenge corruption like the Prophet? Or do they protect their pockets and stay silent while the Ummah falls behind? Are these scholars the ones who should be leading us?

4:143
They waver between this and that, belonging neither to these nor to those. And whomever Allah leaves astray, you will never find for him a way.

Infers: Instead of resisting tyranny, they submit to oppression. They preach patience while corruption thrives. They call for compliance instead of calling for a rise.

4:144
O you who believe! Do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah a clear case against you?

Infers: True believers follow the Quran. Disbelievers follow the books that came after. Was Allah’s command not clear?

4:145
Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire—and you will never find for them a helper.

Infers: Those who claim to follow Islam but twist its laws to suit themselves are worse than disbelievers. They knowingly reject the truth while pretending to uphold it.

4:146
Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allah, and are sincere in their faith—those will be with the believers, and Allah will grant the believers a great reward.

Infers: Religion is about discipline, sincerity, and following the truth. Those who were led astray must realize that repentance isn’t just silence; it’s actively realigning with divine guidance.

4:147
What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe? And Allah is Ever-Appreciative, All-Knowing.

Infers: Allah does not seek to punish or make people suffer. His intention is to give us justly deserved rewards and a life after.
