Surah 4 – An-Nisa (148-176) – Translation & Inferred Meanings

4:148
Allah does not like the public mention of evil, except by one who has been wronged. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Infers: Speaking about sinning and making it seem like everyone does it only encourages, justifies, and leads others to degeneracy.

4:149
If you disclose a good deed or conceal it, or pardon an offense, then indeed, Allah is Ever-Pardoning and All-Powerful.

Infers: Do good where you can, when you can, whether people notice or not—Allah does. Those who forgive others and let go of grievances will find mercy in Allah.

4:150
“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messengers, and wish to make a distinction between Allah and His Messengers, saying, ‘We believe in some and reject others,’ and wish to adopt a way in between.”

Infers: Those who separate the message from the Messenger and follow a separate system called the Sunnah are not monotheists. Duality is no different to Trinity.

4:151
Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.

Infers: Allah does not tolerate divided loyalties, nor does He share His authority with anyone—including His prophets.

4:152
But those who believe in Allah and His messengers and make no distinction between any of them—to them He will give their rewards. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.

Infers: Allah does not need you to add to His guidance. Do not create new rules and extra obligations that make the religion harder to practice. True belief means accepting the Quran as complete and following it—nothing more.

4:153
The People of the Book ask you to bring down a book from the sky. They had already asked Moses for something even greater. They said, “Show us Allah outright,” so the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear signs had come to them, yet We pardoned that and gave Moses a clear authority.

Infers: It is in human nature to try to do more and end up not doing what you were asked. Allah was clear—He gave you the Quran, so follow it. When people tried to do “better” by following the Sunnah, they ended up abandoning the faith. If Allah wanted more, He would have asked for more. Allah knows your nature and your capabilities best.

4:154
And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant, and We said to them, “Enter the gate bowing humbly”; and We said to them, “Do not transgress on the Sabbath,” and We took from them a solemn covenant.

Infers: The Qur’an is your miracle—your covenant. It is complete. But like those before, most ignore it. If you say you’re Muslim, then live by it. No extras, no loopholes, no additions. Keep your promise.

4:155
So for their breaking of the covenant, and their disbelief in the verses of Allah, and their killing of the prophets without right, and their saying, “Our hearts are wrapped” — rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.

Infers: True believers will always be a minority. Those who uphold the Qur’an alone and live by its teachings are the ones who truly honour the covenant. But those who accept slander in the Prophet’s name are the ones killing the faith from within.

4:156
And [they were condemned] for their disbelief and for uttering a grave slander against Mary.

Infers: No different to those who accept slanders that say the Prophet married a child.

4:157
And for their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him—but [another] was made to resemble him. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.

Infers: Islam was never meant to be built on unverifiable stories or extra context. Allah made the Qur’an complete, and told us not to ask unnecessary questions that only cause confusion. It would be best for your imaan if you take with a pinch of salt everything outside the Qur’an—as that’s the only thing preserved for sure.

4:158
But Allah raised him to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

Infers: Just like the crucifixion was glorified, we glorified the Sunnah to divine laws.

4:159
“There is none from the People of the Book but that he will surely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.”

Infers: Surely, Muslims will have to realize how ridiculous it is to live like the Messenger instead of living by the message he repeatedly insisted upon.

4:160
For the wrongdoing of the Jews, We made unlawful for them certain good foods which had been lawful to them, and for their hindering many from the path of Allah.

Infers: Those who mock fellow Muslims for practicing pure monotheism and ignorantly insist on man-made Sunnah laws will be deprived of Allah’s blessings both in health and in life.

4:161
And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of people’s wealth unjustly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

Infers: Those who acquire wealth through deception and exploitative practices are earning blood money, as they are stealing time, effort, and energy—life itself—from others.

4:162
But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you. And those who establish prayer and give zakah and believe in Allah and the Last Day – We will give them a great reward.

Infers: Those with true faith understand religion has always been about praying to God, giving to others, doing good, and not falling into despair—knowing Allah will give them what they deserve. True believers don’t fear hell, because they trust that Allah is always just.

4:163
Indeed, We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the descendants, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. And to David We gave the Psalms.

Infers: Islam has always been the religion of monotheists and worship of Allah. That has always gotten lost because people kept adding things and installed religious hierarchies to control religion instead of learning the message for themselves.

4:164
And We sent messengers We have told you about before, and messengers We have not told you about. And Allah spoke to Moses directly.

Infers: Revelation was only sent through messengers, and the Qur’an was the final revelation. Anyone claiming divine insight or istikhara is being misled by whispers and fabrications.

4:165
Messengers as bringers of good news and warners so that people will have no excuse before Allah after the messengers. And Allah is Ever Almighty, All-Wise.

Infers: The Qur’an guides to success and warns about how Shaitan operates. Don’t elevate man to religious authority and fall for the same traps as previous nations.

4:166
But Allah bears witness to what He has revealed to you. He has revealed it with His knowledge. And the angels bear witness [as well]. And sufficient is Allah as Witness.

Infers: The Qur’an is revealed with Allah’s knowledge, meaning its guidance remains timeless. It is enough to help you navigate life even today—such is the perfection of Allah’s wisdom.

4:167
Indeed, those who disbelieve and prevent others from the path of Allah have certainly gone far astray.

Infers: Those who claim there’s a path outside of the Qur’an and add additions to it are not on the path of Islam.

4:168
Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong—Allah will never forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path.

Infers: Those who speak without knowledge and lead others away from monotheism—Allah will not change your heart. Your mind will remain blocked from guidance.

4:169
Except the path of Hell; they will abide therein forever. And that, for Allah, is always easy.

Infers: Those who accept dual authority—Qur’an and hadith-made laws—are no longer monotheists.

4:170
O mankind, the Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe—it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Infers: The Qur’an is the message the Prophet brought from Allah. So live by it—don’t add to it. It is divine revelation from the One who created you and knows what’s best for you, so stick to it.

4:171
O People of the Book! Do not exceed limits in your religion, and do not say anything about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah and His word, which He conveyed to Mary, and a soul from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Stop! It is better for you. Allah is only one God. Glory be to Him—He is far above having a child. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as a disposer of affairs.

Infers: Just as Jesus was a man, so was Muhammad. Do not elevate him to divine status. Do not distort his message. You cannot improve on Allah’s guidance. So do not add duality to the Qur’an with your Hadith. It is the only source of divine law. It has been completed and must not be undermined through loopholes and conflation. Allah shares His authority with no prophet, no scholar, no imam. So there can be no changes.

4:172
Never would the Messiah disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels near [to Him]. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant – He will gather them to Himself all together.

Infers: The Prophet spent his whole life spreading the teachings of the Qur’an. To say he was arrogant enough to simultaneously have people add Hadith books about his life and give him a share in Allah’s authority is doing him a huge disservice.

4:173
But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards and grant them extra from His bounty. But as for those who were arrogant and disdainful, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or helper.

Infers: Those who believe in the Qur’an alone and live by it will be rewarded with a successful life. But those who are too proud and too ignorant, who add to divine law and turn away from monotheism, will face endless difficulty for their arrogance and defiance of Allah’s authority.

4:174
O mankind! There has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light.

Infers: The Qur’an is the complete guidance for a successful life. It is proof of Allah and a miracle in itself—but you will never know unless you put it into practice.

4:175
So those who believe in Allah and hold fast to Him—He will admit them to mercy from Him and bounty and guide them to Himself on a straight path.

Infers: Those who follow the Qur’an alone and endure the inevitable criticism that comes with it will be rewarded with a successful life.

4:176
They ask you for a ruling. Say, “Allah gives you a ruling concerning inheritance for those who leave no children or parents. If a man dies childless and has a sister, she will inherit half of what he leaves. And if a woman dies childless and has a brother, he will inherit all of her estate. But if there are two sisters, they together will receive two-thirds of the inheritance. If there are both brothers and sisters, the male will receive twice the share of the female. Allah makes things clear to you so you do not go astray. And Allah has full knowledge of all things.”

Infers: When they ask for a ruling, say: I do not pass judgment or invent laws. Everything you need is already in the Qur’an. I am not here to offer religious opinions—Allah alone decides, and we live by what He revealed.
